Ange Postcoglou explained why James Maddison is not in the Tottenham team for his match against Leicester.

Maddison arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium with the Spurs team on Sunday, but the midfielder was a surprise absence when Postcoglou appointed his team.

Addressing Sky Sports before the match, Postcoglou said: “He [Maddison] is still a little painful in the other evening.

“It took him a little and he was not 100%, so he is missing.”

Maddison scored and got up with a good performance when he played 89 minutes to help Spurs beat Hoffenheim 3-2 in the Europa League on Thursday.

When asked if the injury is something serious, Postocoglou said: “No, we hope not. It should be good for next week.

Spurs play Ellsborg in the Europa League next Thursday before going to Brentford in the Premier League next Sunday.

Postcoglou is also without Djed Spence against Leicester after failing a late fitness test.

Pope Sarr has achieved a late fitness test to start in the midfield alongside Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall.

Losing Maddison and Spence for the Leicester game is another blow for the Spurs, who remain without Cristian Romero, Micky Van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, Timo Werner and Wilson Odobert.
