Enzo Maresca says he should consider dropping Robert Sánchez after Erling Haaland capitalized on the Chelsea goalkeeper’s fifth major error of the season to score Manchester City’s second goal in their 3-1 win.
In a match that began with two major errors from City debutant Abdukodir Khusanov, the 20-year-old Uzbek signed this month from Lens, it was Sánchez in the second half whose decision-making was crucial. When the score was 1-1 and Haaland was fighting with defender Trevoh Chalobah, the Spanish goalkeeper came out of his goal to try to recover the ball and was beaten by the Norwegian’s strike.
It was Sánchez’s fifth error this season that led directly to a goal and Maresca refused to confirm the 27-year-old would be in goal for Chelsea against West Ham a week on Monday.
Maresca said: “We certainly trust Robert but, at the same time, he is aware that he makes mistakes. We continue to trust Robert but we have a whole week [training]. We see the reaction and decide on the next matches.
Former England midfielder Jamie Redknapp, speaking on Sky Sports, said: The problem is it just stresses everyone out. This is becoming very public now. Chelsea fans get a bit anxious when he’s in possession, thinking he’s going to make a mistake, then he makes it worse by doing things like today.
“It’s purely decision making, it’s a bad decision he’s making, he doesn’t have to come out like he did and if he stays in goal Haaland probably won’t score. He’s a bad goalkeeper The only thing he can do is continue to work hard in training and try to turn things around, but it’s not looking good for him at the moment.
With one win in seven league matches, Chelsea have dropped to sixth place, while City move up to fourth place on goal difference. “In my opinion, we are a better team than we were a month ago,” Maresca said. “These kinds of games will make us better. You have to have this kind of experience. We can be third or sixth, each match can change the situation a little bit. The good thing is that we are focused and trying to improve game by game.
Guardiola praised his players’ reaction to Khusanov’s errors, with Josko Gvardiol scoring the first and Phil Foden the third. When asked how he viewed the game after that early error led to Noni Madueke’s goal, Guardiola responded. “I thought that wasn’t the best start, was it?” He [Khusanov] will take a lesson. He’s so young, he came [to City] for many years. It’s not the best start of course, but manage [Nicolas] Jackson, with Cole [Palmer]with all these incredible players, it’s not easy. And I love the reaction of his friends.
“He hasn’t done a single training session with us. He did absolutely nothing because we were from Ipswich Town and [then] Paris… so it was just a repeat, a repeat, a repeat. And yes, he will learn. He is young. I’m pretty sure of it. Learn from this and the team’s reaction.
